Candle fires remain a common cause of preventable household accidents in Canada. ASTM F2417, Standard Specification for Fire Safety for Candles, is the internationally recognised method used to evaluate fire hazards associated with decorative and functional candles. This standard plays a critical role in ensuring that candles do not present unreasonable risks of fire, injury, or property damage when used as intended.
At LCS Laboratory Inc., we offer fire safety testing based on ASTM F2417-24 to help Canadian manufacturers, importers, retailers, and industrial hygiene consultants meet regulatory and consumer safety expectations. Our testing service is available to businesses across Canada and internationally.
Why Is ASTM F2417 Testing Important?
Candles, particularly those with coatings, plastic containers, or multiple wicks, can pose hidden hazards such as:
- Excessive flame height
- Glass or container breakage
- Wick migration
- Uncontrolled secondary ignition
Testing to ASTM F2417-24 helps identify these hazards before products reach the market. It reduces the risk of fires, recalls, and legal liability—protecting both your brand and your customers.
Canadian retailers increasingly require third-party verification of product safety. LCS Laboratory’s ASTM F2417 testing gives you the data you need to demonstrate product compliance with internationally accepted fire safety benchmarks.
Technical Overview of the ASTM F2417-24 Test Method
The testing procedure evaluates candle performance under controlled laboratory conditions. Specific requirements include:
- Flame Height: Must not exceed 76 mm (3.0 in); ceremonial candles up to 95 mm (3.75 in).
- Container Integrity: Glass or plastic containers must not crack or break during burning.
- Secondary Ignition: Uncontrolled ignition of surface materials is not allowed.
- Wick Behaviour: Wicks must not migrate or cause flame impingement with the container wall.
- Stability: Freestanding candles must remain upright, including on a 10° incline.
Sample Requirements:
- 3 free-standing candles.
- 24 coated candles are required for coatings that may be exposed to the flame.
- 10 empty plastic containers are required for container flammability testing.
- Operation manual if such is provided with the candles
All candles are test-burned under standardized environmental conditions, and observations are recorded throughout the product’s typical burn cycle. Our laboratory evaluates key hazards such as excessive flame height, spontaneous container failure, tipping, and the merging of flames from multiple wicks.
