Exposure to benzene, a hazardous aromatic hydrocarbon, frequently occurs in industries such as petrochemicals, manufacturing, and painting. Benzene is classified as a known human carcinogen, and prolonged exposure can lead to severe health risks, including leukemia and other blood disorders. Monitoring and controlling workplace exposure to benzene is critical for ensuring worker safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
Evaluate Worker Exposure with Accurate Air Monitoring
At LCS Laboratory Inc., we specialize in assessing occupational exposure to benzene, empowering businesses to protect their workforce. In Ontario, the Ministry of Labour’s current exposure limit for benzene is 0.5 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA), with a short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 2.5 ppm. Compliance with these limits is vital to protect worker’s health. Typically our clients collect 3-10 samples to make sure that the results are representative and cover different operations.
Technical Details of Benzene Air Testing
LCS Laboratory Inc. follows NIOSH Method 1501, a globally recognized protocol for analysing aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzene. Key technical aspects of our testing service include:
- Sampling Requirements:
- Samples are collected on Charcoal Tubes (100 mg/50 mg).
- Sampling Rate: 0.01–0.2 L/min.
- Sample Volume: Minimum of 10 L and a maximum of 30 L.
- Procedure:
- Open sorbent tubes
- Attach the sorbent tube to a calibrated personal sampling pump.
- Collect samples at a known flow rate during the workday, typically for 4-7 hours
- Seal the tubes and ship the samples to our laboratory along with a request for analysis form.
- Analysis:
- LCS Laboratory Inc uses gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and reports results with a sensitivity of 3μg per sample.
