LCS Laboratory Inc. offers laboratory testing of acidic and alkaline liquids for metal corrosion rate.
The corrosion rate is measured in millimeters of metal loss per year. Both Canadian (TDG) and International (GHS) regulations, require the test to be performed at 55°C. This temperature is selected as the highest possible temperature a cargo or a freight tank may be exposed to during direct sunlight on a sunny day.
The testing procedure is based on the ASTM G31-72 method, where the GHS introduced some additional requirements for testing the corrosion rate at 55°C using multiple coupons. LCS Laboratory performs the test in 2 separate reactors with 3 test coupons in each. Three steel C-1020 coupons are tested in the first reactor. One coupon is fully immersed into the testing liquid, the second coupon is half immersed in liquid and partially exposed to air, and the third one is suspended in the air without touching the testing liquid. The second reactor is used to test the corrosion rate of aluminum AL 7075-T6 coupons.
This is a 7-day test, although it can be interrupted if any of the coupons fully disintegrates before the 7-days are reached. When the test is completed we measure the thinning of the metal coupons over the duration of the experiment and report them as the rate of uniform corrosion. The rate of pitting corrosion is also measured and reported separately. If the corrosion rate of any of the 6 coupons, exceeds 6.25 mm/year, the liquid is classified as “Corrosive to Metals”.
