Laboratory Test: Hydrogen Peroxide Exposure Assessment by the OSHA 1019 Method

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer used in many industries as a bleaching and oxidizing agent. In healthcare and food processing, it is commonly used for sterilization and disinfection. Consumer and industrial products typically contain between 3% and 30% hydrogen peroxide.

Although hydrogen peroxide is available over the counter and often viewed as safe, its vapor can pose a health risk. It is volatile, and the Ontario Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL, 2017) is 1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average. Exposure to elevated concentrations may irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, and contact with skin or lung tissue can cause chemical burns.

Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor Testing

LCS Laboratory provides air quality testing kits and laboratory analysis for hydrogen peroxide vapor in workplaces and controlled environments.

Our sampling kits include:

  • Personal air sampling pumps
  • 25 mm sampling cassettes

After sample collection, analysis is performed in our Industrial Hygiene Laboratory using the OSHA 1019 method. Results are reported in accordance with AIHA laboratory standards.

Typical sampling conditions:

  • Flow rate: 1–2 L/min
  • Maximum air volume: 240 L

To order a hydrogen peroxide air sampling kit or request laboratory analysis, please contact LCS Laboratory by email. Equipment is supplied calibrated, charged, and ready for use. ©
