Urea Formaldehyde Foam Insulation (UFFI) was an inexpensive polymer based foam, that was used in Canada in the early 1980’s to insulate houses. Now, 40 years later it still produces trace amounts of formaldehyde. The UFFI would have been installed into the void between walls, creating good thermal insulation. It was found that during the first several days after the application, UFFI produced dangerous amount of formaldehyde. These days, even 40 years later, formaldehyde is still produced by old UFFI, and a significant part of formaldehyde still escapes into ambient air.
If formaldehyde finds its way into a building, its concentration inside can quickly reach the maximum allowable level of 40 parts per billion.
LCS Laboratory offers air sampling kits that are designed to measure the formaldehyde concentration inside your home. The majority of our clients collect one formaldehyde sample from each level of the house including basement. In special cases, samples can be collected in the rooms where a family member experiencing difficulty of breathing or asthma.
The test takes 24 hours and doesn’t require special training. We will send you a testing kit and sampling instructions. The samples require a laboratory analysis and must be returned to our laboratory in London, Ontario. The test is performed in accordance with the official testing method OSHA #1007, developed by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (USA Government).
