Laboratory Test: Kinematic viscosity testing for TDG and GHS classification

viscosity

Our kinematic viscosity testing of flammable liquids supports compliance with both the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classification and labelling. Flammability classification is not determined by flash point alone. The viscosity of a liquid can significantly change how it behaves in real conditions—how it pours, atomizes, spreads, and ultimately how easily it can ignite.

  • Flammability class can change dramatically when viscosity changes.
A product that behaves as a low-viscosity liquid may fall into a more stringent flammability class than the same formulation with higher viscosity. This has

This simple test helps ensure that your product is classified correctly—before it goes to market or into transport.

Our kinematic viscosity test (room temperature and 40 °C)

LCS Laboratory offers kinematic viscosity measurement of flammable liquids at two key temperatures:

  • Room temperature measurement
This reflects how your product behaves under typical storage and handling conditions.
  • 40 °C measurement
This is a common reference temperature in many technical standards and can be critical for understanding how your product behaves under warmer conditions during transport or use.

All measurements are performed according to ASTM D1200 for high viscosity liquids and other ASTM methods for regular liquids. Your report clearly identifies the method, test conditions, and results so they can be used in technical files, safety data sheets (SDS), and regulatory documentation.
