Several factors can cause eye dryness and/or irritation. If you experience eye discomfort regularly when returning home, the cause is most likely the quality of air of your house. This article explains the difference in eye irritation caused by formaldehyde and mold.
1.Formaldehyde. This gas is toxic, carcinogenic and is a common contaminant of indoor air. Formaldehyde levels are regulated in Ontario, and should not exceed 40 parts per billion in residential homes or apartments (Health Canada 2015). At such low concentrations, it’s smell is barely noticeable, but the exposure causes dryness of the eyes. Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde may trigger asthma, and other lung related diseases. The most common sources of formaldehyde are:
- New furniture
- New laminate or hardwood flooring
- Urea Formaldehyde Foam Insulation (new or old)
- Smoke from a fireplace, candles, and/or cigarettes
- Hobbies that are related to woodworking
- Hobbies that require soldering, like repair of computers and other electronic devices
Usually, irritation due to the presence formaldehyde is stronger during winter and summer months. This is due to the fact that windows are kept closed, and formaldehyde concentration is able to build up, occasionally, to a dangerous level.
2. Mold is a common allergen. Mold spores are very small, only 1-15 microns in diameter, and can travel a great distance in the air. For active growth, mold needs water and thrives when humidity in the air is above 50%. Mold related allergies are more frequent when:
- You have a previous history of allergies
- Your house or apartment has water damage. Sometimes this may be hidden damage such as a water leak beyond the drywall or under a carpet.
- Humidity in any part of your house is 55% or more
Obviously, other chemicals and allergens may cause symptoms similar to the ones described above, but formaldehyde and mold are by far the most common cause of discomfort.
Please monitor your health condition closely. Contact your doctor immediately and describe your symptoms.
