Hundreds of fibrous minerals can be found around the world and classified as asbestoforms. Only six of them were used on an industrial scale and for practical reasons are classified as ASBESTOS. Some of them are very common and some are extremely rare. So far we analyzed about 50,000samples shipped to us from all corners of North America, and among all the samples tested positive for asbestos, the Chrysotile is by far the most common representative of the asbestos family responsible for 98% of the positive cases. It is followed by Tremolite and Actinolite, which are the common impurities in Vermiculite attic insulation with a moderate 2% positivity rate. Amosite is detected in less than 0.1% of the samples, while Crocidolite, and Anthophyllite are seen in less than 0.01% of the positive samples.

The “popularity” of Chrysotile can be explained by its unique properties: lightweight, non-flammable, suitable for making yarn and cloth, chemically inert, and so cheap that it can be used in construction materials. It used to be a “wonder mineral”, and it took nearly 50 years to recognize that the “wonder” is toxic.
