LCS Laboratory provides laboratory analysis of construction materials for Designated Substances Surveys (DSS) required before renovation, demolition, and construction projects. Our service is designed for environmental consultants, occupational hygienists, engineers, and construction consultants who require reliable laboratory data to support compliance with Ontario legislation.
Ontario Requirements
Section 30 of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires project owners to determine whether designated substances are present at a project site before construction begins. The owner must:
- Identify designated substances present at the site.
- Prepare a list of these substances.
- Include the list in tender documents.
- Provide the list to prospective constructors before a construction contract is awarded.
Failure to comply may result in liability for losses or damages incurred by constructors, contractors, or subcontractors.
Laboratory Testing
LCS Laboratory analyzes building materials for a broad range of designated substances and other hazardous materials commonly encountered during demolition and renovation projects, including:

Typical materials submitted include drywall, plaster, joint compound, floor tile, mastic, roofing materials, caulking, paint, concrete, brick, mortar, insulation, wood, and soil.
One Laboratory for Multiple Analyses
Many Designated Substances Surveys require testing for several contaminants. LCS Laboratory performs multiple analytical services within the same laboratory, allowing consultants to submit all DSS samples to a single facility.
