LCS Laboratory Inc. offers reliable Vermiculite (Zonolite) asbestos testing for both public and industrial clients. With extensive experience in asbestos testing, our lab analyses thousands of vermiculite samples annually, and we find elevated asbestos levels in approximately 10–30% of them. Ensuring accurate testing starts with collecting a proper sample, and following our guidelines below will help you get the best results.
Steps for Collecting a Vermiculite Sample for Asbestos Analysis
1. Collect Samples from Multiple Areas
Asbestos is often unevenly distributed throughout vermiculite insulation. To obtain a representative sample, collect small portions from various areas in the attic, combining them into a single sample. This approach ensures more reliable results by accounting for potential areas of high and low asbestos concentrations.
2. Sample from the Bottom Layer
Asbestos fibres, being denser than vermiculite flakes, tend to settle towards the bottom of the insulation over time. For an unbiased sample, make sure to reach down to the bottom layer of the insulation and collect from there.
3. Provide an Adequate Sample Size
Our lab requires about 20–40 grams of vermiculite—roughly the volume of a full coffee cup—for accurate asbestos analysis. A sandwich-sized Ziploc bag filled with vermiculite is ideal for submission.
