LCS Laboratory Inc., offers Vermiculite (Zonolite) testing for asbestos. This service is available for public and industrial clients.
Every year we analyze 1000’s of vermiculite samples, and about 10-30% of them have an elevated asbestos level.
When you take a sample, it is very important that you follow some simple rules:
- Take several samples from different areas of the attic. Asbestos is not evenly distributed through the insulation. There are areas with high and low asbestos levels. To collect a representative sample, you need to take small portions of insulation from different areas and combine them into one sample.
- Take a sample from the bottom of the insulation layer. Asbestos crystals are heavier than Vermiculite flakes. With time, asbestos sinks to the bottom of the insulation layer. To ensure that your sample is unbiased, try to reach the bottom of the insulation and take your samples from there.
- Give us enough sample to work with. Our laboratory needs approximately 20-40 g of vermiculite (about the size of a full coffee cup) for asbestos analysis. You can send us a sandwich size Ziploc bag with the vermiculite, this is a perfect sample size.
When your sample is collected, please place the sample into a Ziploc bag and seal it tight. Place the sample bag into another bag for extra protection. Label each sample individually, complete the Request for Analysis Form, and send the sample with the included paperwork to our laboratory.
Please remember to give your current email address. When the lab results are ready, you will receive a formal, signed report by email.
