LCS Laboratory offers a simple test to detect off-gassing from Urea Formaldehyde Foam Insulation (UFFI or UFI).

UFFI is a soft insulation material that was used in the 1970’s and 1980’s to insulate homes. In the 1980’s it was banned in Canada, but still used in the USA and Europe. The problem is, that UFFI can slowly deteriorate producing the toxic gas formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is carcinogenic and is strictly regulated in residential dwellings. Its concentration in the air cannot exceed 0.04 ppm (40 ppb).

The primary symptoms of exposure to low levels of formaldehyde are: dry eyes, nose and throat irritation. Secondary symptoms also include headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Since there can be other potential causes for some of the above mentioned symptoms, you may want to consult your doctor to determine the root cause, before proceeding with testing.

Our laboratory offers a simple DIY sampling kit that allows you to measure the level of formaldehyde in your home. The sampling procedure is very straightforward. When the sampling is complete, please return the samples to our lab for laboratory testing. Please check the sampling manual here and call us if you need any further clarification.

To order the test, please email us to request a sampling kit. Let us know number of rooms that you want to test, and we will provide the appropriate equipment.

The cost of testing includes sampling devices, shipping (for addresses within Canada), laboratory analysis and a testing report. The rates are $85 per room (with 2 rooms minimum) plus the shipping cost.  To request your kit please email us and we will reply with a formal quote.
