Sampling Procedure Using NIOSH 2018 Method
To collect air samples for acetaldehyde analysis:
- Sampler: Use cartridges containing silica gel coated with acidified 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH).
- Flow Rate: Set the sampling pump to 0.1 to 1.0 L/min.
- Volume: Collect between 1 L and 15 L of air, depending on expected concentrations.
- Shipment: Ship samples cold (0 to 5 °C) to ensure stability.
Once received, samples are extracted with acetonitrile and analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection. The reporting limit for acetaldehyde is 0.5 µg per sample. - Sampling Alternative. The samples can also be collected on Diffusive samplers.
