Workplace Exposure to Fibreglass: Airborne Fibres and Dust. Fibreglass production and weaving introduce occupational exposure risks due to airborne fibres and dust. The Ministry of Labour of Ontario regulates workplace exposure, setting limits at 1 fibre per cubic centimetre (f/cc) over an 8-hour TWA for fibrous glass and 5 mg/m³ inhalable glass dust. Employers must comply with these regulations to protect workers from inhalation risks and skin irritation.

Fibreglass exposure can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory irritation and long-term lung damage. Without proper monitoring, workers handling molten glass, chopped fibres, and woven fabrics may be exposed to unsafe levels of airborne contaminants. Regular air quality testing ensures compliance with Canadian regulations and helps employers maintain a safe and healthy workplace.

The air sampling follows two standard methods:

  • Total fibres by NIOSH 7400. There the glass fibres are collected using personal, battery-operated pumps at 1-2 L per minute for up to 300 L of air. Our lab analyses the fibres using Phase Contrast Microscopy and reports the concentration of fibres in the air in fibres per cubic centimetre (ff/cc)
  • Total inhalable dust by MDHS 14/4. The glass dust, including the fibres, is collected on IOM cassettes at 2 L/min for up to 8 hours. Our lab tests the cassettes and reports the results in mg/m³

The client then can compare findings with occupational exposure limits to evaluate workers’ safety.
