Crystalline silica, a primary component of many construction materials, sand, and natural rocks, is often present in industrial and residential dust. While silica in settled dust is not directly regulated, its potential to become airborne poses significant health risks. Understanding silica contamination levels on surfaces can provide valuable insights into past exposure, housekeeping practices, and potential sources of contamination.
Why Is Crystalline Silica Testing Important?
Crystalline silica, particularly α-Quartz and Cristobalite, are known to cause serious health conditions, such as silicosis and lung cancer, when inhaled for prolonged time. Once settled dust containing silica becomes resuspended in the air, it can expose workers or tenants to hazardous levels of respirable silica particles. Regular testing and monitoring of surface dust can:
- Identify areas of contamination.
- Highlight inadequate cleaning practices.
- Serve as an indicator of potential airborne silica exposure.
- Support compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
By addressing silica contamination proactively, employers can create safer environments for their workforce and reduce the risk of long-term health issues.
Technical Details of Crystalline Silica Testing
LCS Laboratory employs advanced analytical methods to detect α-Quartz and Cristobalite in settled dust. Our process includes:
- Surface Sampling: Following a modified version of NIOSH method 9102, surface wipe samples are collected using pharmaceutical grade alcohol wipes/pads.
- For industrial settings, we recomend taking sampple from 4″ by 4″ (100 cm2)
- If you collect samples in residential environment, or from wisually clean areas, you may want to wipe 1′ by 1′ are to boost overall sencitivity.
- Laboratory Analysis: Samples are analysed according to NIOSH method 7602, adapted for wipe samples.
- Sensitivity: Our method reliably detects Quartz and Cristobalite at levels as low as 10 μg per sample.
This rigorous approach ensures the quality of the testing.
