Tracing metal dust and investigation of the extent of area contamination heavily relies on wipe sampling. Presence of Lead and Beryllium in settled dust is regulated by EPA USA, and the contamination guidelines are generally adopted through North America. Other metals like arsenic, manganese iron, or mercury are not regulated and their level is used as indicator of good/bad housekeeping. Metals and their compounds are generally nonvolatile and metal fumes and dust eventually settle on the surface. Chemical composition of the settled dust at it level allows to identify the source of contamination. Iron rich dust is likely originates from steel, tin dust comes from soldering, lead and copper dust comes firearm.
Surface sampling for metals is well developed and sampling procedure is explained in NIOSH method 9102. LCS Laboratory offers sampling media and third party laboratory testing for lead and variety of other metals with sensitivity 0.1-1 ug/sample.
