Question: Can LCS Laboratory measure the saturated vapor pressure of a Sodium Chlorite solution? The purpose of the test is to determine if when stored in an open tank (atmospheric pressure), the vapor pressure exceeds a certain level. Best regards. Dr. K.

Answer: Hello Dr. K. Thank you for asking, yes we can measure it. The vapor pressure of sodium chlorite solutions slowly change with time and depend on the size and material of the storage tank. This happens due to various chemical reactions which occur in the tank during storage or transportation.

When the tank is open, the vapor pressure is practically constant. This is the pressure that we can measure.

When the tank is is closed, you may have a slow decomposition of chlorite in the solution which produces chlorine and chlorine oxides. In addition, sodium chlorite is highly corrosive and will  react with the material of the container, which adds gases into the vapour phase. As a result, you may experience gas build up. In some extreme situations the pressure inside the tank can exceed the atmospheric one. In this case, a container should have a pressure release valve
