At LCS Laboratory, we process hundreds of vermiculite samples each year, and this is one of the most frequent questions we receive.
QUESTION: Hello, I’ve been told by my electrician that the vermiculite in my attic may contain asbestos and needs testing before work can continue. How many samples should I collect?
ANSWER: If you’ve hired a contractor or electrician, you assume the role of an employer and must comply with Ontario Asbestos Regulation 278/05. According to this regulation, a minimum of three separate samples must be collected and analyzed to determine if the vermiculite contains asbestos.
Here’s how the process works:
- If all three samples test below 0.5% asbestos, the vermiculite can be classified as non-asbestos material.
- If any single sample contains asbestos at 0.5% or higher, the entire vermiculite insulation must be treated as asbestos-containing material (ACM).
This regulation ensures accuracy and reduces the risk of overlooking localized contamination.
