Laboratory Test: Acid and Alkali Reserve Testing for Corrosivity Classification

LCS Laboratory Inc. now provides acid reserve and alkali reserve testing to support consultants who classify products under the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 (SOR/2001‑269) and the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. This determination is often required alongside skin corrosion and metal corrosion assessments to establish whether a product meets the regulatory definition of a corrosive material.

Purpose of Reserve Testing in Corrosivity Assessment

pH alone is not sufficient to determine corrosive potential. Many products with extreme pH values have limited buffering capacity and may not meet the regulatory threshold for corrosivity. Acid and alkali reserve testing quantifies the neutralization capacity, providing a more accurate measure of the product’s ability to cause chemical burns.

Regulatory Definitions

  • Acid reserve
    Grams of sodium hydroxide required to bring 100 mL of a liquid acidic product (or 100 g of a solid/paste/gel) to pH 4.00 ± 0.05.
  • Alkali reserve
    Grams of sodium hydroxide neutralized when 100 mL of a liquid basic product (or 100 g of a solid/paste/gel) is titrated to pH 10.00 ± 0.05 using hydrochloric acid.

These values directly support classification decisions for consumer products and can complement corrosivity evaluations under TDG, WHMIS, and international transport frameworks.

Summary of the Analytical Procedure

1. pH Measurement (CCCR 44(1))

Performed using good scientific practices consistent with ASTM D1293:

  • Liquids are tested as dispensed.
  • Solids, pastes, and gels are tested as 10% aqueous solutions.

2. Titration to Defined Endpoints (CCCR 44(2))

  • A suitable aliquot of the product (or its 10% solution) is titrated.
  • Acidic products are titrated upward to pH 4.00 ± 0.05.
  • Basic products are titrated downward to pH 10.00 ± 0.05.

 

When Consultants Use This Test

Safety and transportation consultants typically request reserve testing when:

  • A product has extreme pH but uncertain buffering capacity
  • Corrosivity classification requires multiple lines of evidence
  • Results must be defensible for regulatory submissions or audits
  • A product is being reformulated to avoid corrosive classification
  • Corrosive potential must be evaluated across skin, metal, and chemical reserve criteria

Reserve testing is especially useful when pH and SDS information alone do not provide a clear classification outcome.
