Peracetic acid (PAA) is a volatile and hazardous compound combining the corrosive properties of organic acids and the oxidizing power of organic peroxides. Widely used in the food industry as a disinfectant and cleanser, it also finds applications as an antimicrobial agent for hard surfaces, a disinfectant for medical supplies, a biofilm preventative in pulp industries, and a water purifier. Due to its corrosive and irritating properties, exposure to peracetic acid vapours can cause significant skin, eye, and lung irritation, and at higher concentrations, severe chemical burns.

Regulations in Ontario set the Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL) for peracetic acid at 0.4 ppm as inhalable vapour and mist (Ontario 2017). To ensure accurate measurement, peracetic acid air samples are collected using specialised sampling tubes equipped with a hydrogen peroxide removal pre-filter to mitigate interference. The recommended sampling flow rate is 1 L/min for a duration of 20-30 minutes.

Why Monitoring Peracetic Acid Matters

Industrial exposure to peracetic acid poses serious health risks, particularly in high-use settings such as food processing, medical facilities, and water treatment plants. Monitoring airborne concentrations is essential for:

  • Protecting workers’ health and safety by preventing overexposure.
  • Ensuring compliance with Canadian regulatory standards.
  • Establishing baseline data for workplace air quality assessments.

Accurate sampling and testing provide actionable insights, enabling effective control measures to mitigate risks.
