When cement boards are reinforced with asbestos fibers they become very strong and durable. Even now, 50 years later, we still can see sidings on the old garages and buildings made of cement boards. Other popular uses of asbestos cement boards were roofing products made under the trade name “Transite”.

The distinctive feature of asbestos cement boards is their hardness, they are usually 5-7 mm thick, and in many cases, asbestos fibers are visible with the naked eye along the freshly broken edge of the board which gives them a “fluffy” appearance.

We tested several hundred samples of the cement boards made before 1981, and more than 75% of them were identified as asbestos-containing material. with a typical concentration of asbestos between 15% and 40% of Chrysotile.

Our laboratory can assist you with asbestos testing. We need about 1 sq inches or 1 teaspoon of the cement board material. To learn more about the test, how to submit the sample, and what is the cost, please visit our “asbestos testing” page.
