Collecting the right sample size is critical for accurate and reliable asbestos testing. At LCS Laboratory in London, Ontario, we perform thousands of asbestos analyses each year and ensure accuracy by conducting every test in triplicate. To achieve this, we require specific sample quantities tailored to the type of material being tested. This guide will help you prepare and send properly sized samples for efficient and accurate analysis.
How Much Material Is Needed for Asbestos Testing?
Construction Materials (Tiles, Drywall, Shingles, etc.)
For solid construction materials, a sample of at least one gram is required—roughly the size of a 1/4 teaspoon. Larger samples, such as a full teaspoon or a 1″ x 1″ chunk of drywall, are also acceptable and often easier to handle. However, please avoid sending excessive quantities, like rolls of vinyl flooring or multiple pounds of drywall, as these are unnecessary for our analysis process.
Vermiculite Attic Insulation
Due to the unique nature of vermiculite insulation, larger sample sizes are needed. Each test uses between 20 and 30 grams, equivalent to a full coffee cup or a sandwich-sized Ziploc bag filled with material. This ensures we have enough material to provide a reliable and thorough analysis.
Preparing Your Sample for Shipment

Why Is Sample Size Important?
Accurate asbestos testing depends on having enough material to conduct triplicate analyses, a critical step in ensuring precision and reliability. Insufficient sample sizes can lead to inconclusive results or delays in processing. By following the guidelines above, you help our team deliver accurate results quickly and efficiently.
