LCS Laboratory tests hundreds of vinyl tiles and vinyl sheet floors every year. Older vinyl flooring made before 1982 may contain asbestos. Asbestos used to be cheap, readily available, and greatly improved the durability of floor tiles. This is why it was so widely used in construction materials.

Asbestos was also used in other flooring materials, namely in underlay paper and in floor adhesive (mastic). Over the years, additional layers of flooring may have been placed over the original asbestos-containing tiles. As a result, if at some point you wish to remove old flooring you may have to deal with a thick, sandwich-like material composed of several layers of tile, glue and underlay.

If you want to send a sample for analysis, please download and complete a request form. Your sample may have several layers. You need to tell us how you want your sample to be tested- as one piece (cheaper)?  or separately for every layer (more expensive)?

  • Some consultants ask us to analyze a layered sample as a single sample, because if it needs to be removed, it will be removed together as one piece.
  • Another approach is to analyze layer by layer. This is is used to determine which specific layer holds the asbestos

Our laboratory is happy to test flooring samples for you. If we analyze it as a single sample, the invoice will reflect the analysis of 1 (one) sample. If we need to analyze all 4 layers in a sample, the invoice will show an analysis of 4 samples.
