Marijuana plant contains high concentration of terpenes that are responsible for the characteristic smell of marijuana products. Terpenes are natural organic compounds that can be found in most plants, industrial solvents (as turpentine), and many cleaning supplies with the floral or citrus smell.

LCS Laboratory offers sampling kits for the measurement of the concentration of total Terpenes in the air of your home. “Total”  refers to the fact that we do not always know what is the source of terpenes and we report the sum (or total) of all terpenes present.

Sampling Kit: The kit allows very precise and sensitive detection of Terpenes in residential air. The kit includes several dosimeters, a sampling instruction, and prepaid laboratory analysis. You will need to open the dosimeters and place them in different rooms for 3-4 days. Once the sampling is complete, please return dosimeters to our lab for analysis.

Our laboratory analyses terpenes using a standard, governmentally approved method NIOSH 1552. Once the test is complete, we will email you a certificate of analysis with a concentration of terpenes in the air of your house.

Why should you use the kit? The test is the only reliable method that allows you to evaluate the level (concentration) of Marijuana smell in your house and compare it with comfort and safey standards.

The DIY kit is not suitable for legal or forensic investigations.

How to read your lab results, and what do they mean?

  • <0.01 ppm. The concentration of terpenes is less than 0.01 ppm. This concentration is below the odor threshold and cannot be sensed by most people.
  • 0.01-0.04 ppm. The smell is detectable by the most sensitive people. At the same time, this concentration of terpenes is 100 times below the occupational exposure limit and is likely safe to the general public.
  • 0.04-0.1 ppm. Nuisance smell. The concentration of terpenes is approximately 50 times lower than the occupational exposure limit and therefore is likely safe. At this concentration range, the smell intensity is similar to the smell of freshly peeled orange.
  • 0.1-1 ppm. Very strong smell, The concentration of terpenes well exceeds the LEED standard for clean air. The source of the smell should be investigated and eliminated. At this concentration, terpenes can be harmful to children and people with chronic illnesses.

The typical cost of testing is $200-$300. To order your kit or to request a quote please contact us with your shipping address and the number of rooms that you need to test.  Thank you for your interest and stay safe.
