LCS Laboratory Inc., is offering rentals for a unique personal sampler for thoracic dust: BGI GK 2.69 cyclone. The cyclone is listed as a thoracic dust sampler in the NIOSH method 5524. The cyclone fits into a standard 37 mm cassette and should be operated at 1.6 L/min.

Thoracic particulate fraction is a fraction that can penetrate the respiratory tracts and enter the lungs. Examples of dusts for which this fraction is of particular concern include cotton, the mist of metal working fluids, sulfuric acid mist, and other dusts causing respiratory diseases.

From a practical perspective Thoracic Particulate Matter is a fraction of dust with a 50% cut-point at 10-μm. This fraction is almost identical to the PM10 definition widely used in environmental science.
