Over 200,000 houses in Canada are insulated with vermiculite. Unfortunately, vermiculite is a product has been known to contain asbestos. If you are in the process of buying or selling an older home, we recommend checking for vermiculite. If you see it, you may want to check it for asbestos.

Vermiculite is made by expanding mica at high temperatures.  Vermiculite was be an ideal insulation material: it is inflammable, lightweight, doesn’t change it’s properties with time, and very easy to work with. The only problem is: it may contain asbestos.

The very worst samples of vermiculite contain no more than 5-6% of asbestos by weight, but this concentration is high enough to classify it as Asbestos Containing Material (ACM). The good news is not all samples contain asbestos.

The only way to find out whether your sample is contaminated with asbestos or not is to order a laboratory test. When it comes to asbestos testing, we are the most experienced Canadian laboratory. Contact us today if you need to discuss your project.
