Medical grade hand sanitizers are formulated with 70% of ethanol and/or isopropanol (IPA). Some products may include glycerol and 1-2% of hydrogen peroxide. Because of the shortage of food grade ethanol, Health Canada temporarily approved use of technical grade ethanol that may contain up to 1000 ppm of acetaldehyde.  In addition, the hydrogen peroxide, also oxidizes alcohol into aldehyde and further into corresponding organic acid.

LCS laboratory offers an HPLC-UV analysis for trace amounts of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde in the alcohol based hand sanitizers. We also offer air quality tests for alcohols, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde to keep our front-line workers and health professionals safe.
