LCS Laboratory offers an analysis for free formaldehyde in polymers. Formaldehyde is a common ingredient (monomer) of polymers: phenol formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde and some other resins. Free formaldehyde is carcinogenic and is strictly regulated.

During the test, free formaldehyde is extracted and derivatized in situ with DNPH.  Instant derivatization allows us to preserve otherwise volatile and reactive formaldehyde form being lost. The sensitivity of the method depends on the polymer solubility and porosity. Typically we report free formaldehyde with a sensitivity of 100 ppm, and in some cases we can see as low as 10 ppm. Laboratory requires at least one gram of the polymer for testing.
