The entire variety of sampling procedures can be divided into 5 groups:

  1. Wipe samples. These samples are collected from nonporous surface like glass, metal, ceramic, or plastic by carefully collecting a contaminant with gauze or paper wipe. Usually standardized area of 1 sq.ft. or 100 cm² are used to quantify levels of contamination.  The method is commonly used for soluble or extractable chemicals like oils and metals.
  2. Micro vacuuming. This methods can be used to collect loose dust from both porous and non-porous surfaces. Dust samples are collected on standard cassette and can be further tested for any chemical or material.
  3. Tape lift. Sample is collected on clear duct tape by a single touch of the surface with a glued side of the tape. This method is commonly used for direct microscopic study of the samples.
  4. Staining. The surface of concern is sprayed with color developing chemicals. If a chemical of concern is present, the color stain appears. This method is rarely used because it is destructive, contaminates the surface with chemicals, and is purely qualitative.
