Respirable dust, comprising tiny particles with a median diameter of 3-4 microns, poses a significant health hazard, especially when laden with materials like silica or heavy metals. Regulatory bodies like OSHA in the USA and The Ministry of Labour of Ontario recommend a maximum exposure limit of 3 mg/m³ for respirable particulates.
LCS Laboratory was commissioned by a leading ceramic tile manufacturer to conduct a groundbreaking study on the generation of respirable dust during the dry-cutting process—a service exclusive to our laboratory in North America.

Employing a dry-cutting technique, we meticulously examined the respirable dust emitted during the cutting of various tile types. Using the NIOSH 0600 methodology, we collected samples from three distinct locations within one foot of the cutting area. Subsequently, our team conducted gravimetric analysis on these samples to precisely quantify the concentration of respirable dust in the ambient air during each cutting operation.

Fig. 1. Concentration of respirable dust in air during cutting of tiles 1-4 compared to maximum daily exposure limit. Concentration ranges represent the lowest and the highest values of respirable dust in air collected for each tile, and a total of three samples per tile.

Our findings unveiled significant variations in respirable dust concentrations across different tile types. The lowest recorded concentration of respirable dust in the air stood at 30 mg/m³ for Tile 1, whereas Tiles 2 and 4 exhibited the highest concentrations at 100 mg/m³. These results underscore the critical importance of understanding and mitigating the risks associated with respirable dust in industrial environments. The results indicate that the concentration of respirable dust in the air near the source can exceed the maximum allowable concentration for Respirable Dust by 10 – 30 folds.
